How to Create the Perfect Home Office

If like many, you’ve recently transitioned into a working from home arrangement with your employer, you will need to create a home office.

You might be tempted to work in bed and skip the process of building a home office. Studies show that working or studying in bed can impact your ability to sleep at night.

So, it’s important to have a dedicated workspace where you can concentrate and focus on your to-do list each day. This way, you don’t need to compromise your sleep because of your work.

When designed properly, home offices can improve productivity. Once your new office space is set up, you will notice the difference in your work efficiency, especially if you have been guilty of working from the bed for the last few months.

Whatever your job, you can manage your schedule and succeed in your job when you have a positive space to work in. It doesn’t matter how many working hours in a year you have. Having a nice home office is all about finding the balance between comfort, productivity, and style.

Not only do you need to get the must-have equipment for your home office but you also need to consider the layout, design, and overall vibe of your home office. If you’re not sure where to start when creating the perfect home office, you’ve come to the right place.

We’ve rounded up a list of some top tips so that you can enhance your working-from-home experience in an aesthetically pleasing and work-focused office.

Choose the Location

Before you can start buying office equipment, you need to decide where in your home you want to work. Consider your working style and which area of your home you think you’ll be most productive.

If you live with other people, you will also need to take into consideration where your family or house mates will be during the day. For example, you’ll probably want to avoid choosing a home office that is right next door to the kids’ playroom.

Ideally, try and find a space in your home that is quiet and solitary. This is especially important if you often have work calls and video meetings. The last thing you want is your work colleagues to hear everything that is going on in your home!

With that being said, we understand that it’s not always easy to find a quiet place in your home, especially if you have children. Do the best that you can with a space that is available. Setting up a small office space in the living room or bedroom can be just as effective as using a larger space.

Find the Right Lighting

One of the most easily forgotten, but most important, factors to consider when creating the perfect home office is lighting. Make sure to set up your office is an area of your home that gets a lot of natural light.

Studies show that sunlight is important for focus, mood, and creativity. Exposing yourself to natural light will improve your ability to concentrate during the work day and reduce fatigue and drowsiness.

We can’t forget the benefits of sunlight on your health and well-being too. When your skin is exposed to natural sunlight, it synthesizes vitamin D, which is an essential nutrient for bone health, metabolism, and hormone production.

Position your desk near the window so you can capture the sun rays while you work. This will be especially helpful to combat early morning tiredness as it will help to regulate your circadian rhythm.

During winter when the days are much shorter and there are less sunlight hours, you’ll need to use artificial lighting towards the end of your work day. Include a couple of lamps or overhead lights in your office so you aren’t left working in the dark!

Choose the Right Color Palette

Believe it or not, the colors that you choose for your home office make a huge difference to the way you work. You should choose colors that enable you to focus but also create an aesthetic office space for you to work in.

Avoid painting your office walls bright pink or adding too many colorful accessories as this can distract you from your work. Instead, use a neutral, light color palette for the interior design of your office. If you want to include color, go for muted colors that aren’t too harsh or garish.

Reduce Distractions

Working from home can often come with many distractions. Whether it’s your kids, pets, housemates, or neighbors, you can’t always control your external environment.

However, you can try your best to eliminate distractions when working from home by keeping your office space clean and spacious. You can also play relaxing music through a speaker to reduce outside noise when you’re not participating in online meetings.

Make sure you take regular breaks throughout the day to clear your mind and give your eyes a break from the computer or laptop screen.

Get the Right Furniture

Once you’ve found the perfect space in your home to set up a new office, it’s time to consider what items of furniture you want to put in there.

You’ll need a desk and an office chair, as well as additional stationery items, like a calendar, notepad, pen, and highlighters.

Most of us work from a computer or laptop and you may also need additional office equipment, like a printer or webcam for online video calls.

When choosing an office desk, you can either go for a standard seated desk or a sit-stand desk.

The latter can be adjusted to different heights so that you can spend half of your day seated and the other half standing.

Sit-stand desks are a great option if you want to increase your movement during the work day.

For the days where you’re seated for several hours, you will need a comfortable and supportive chair. Your office chair should be adjusted to the right height so that you can sit with your feet resting on the floor.

The back of the chair should support your spine and lower back so you don’t get stiff and tense by the end of the day.
