Beyond Typing: The Evolution of CAPTCHA Security

CAPTCHA is a verification method implemented to stop bots from having access to websites and resources. This is to prevent automated attacks or threats. CAPTCHA is an acronym for Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart.

This technology works by providing a series of challenges that are easy for humans but computers cannot detect that. CAPTCHA creates an additional layer of security for your accounts, protecting them from bot spamming.

CAPTCHA security is important in protecting individual sensitive information. As the general rule that data are to be protected and kept confidential, CAPTCHA helps add extra security and ensures that your information is kept encrypted when sharing or transferring.

There are many examples of CAPTCHA as technology evolved. CAPTCHA security is getting a bit stronger and more useful. Text-based and image-based CAPTCHAs are the most common examples and they will be discussed with some other types of CAPTCHA in this post.

Traditional Typing-based CAPTCHAs

Typing-based or text-based CAPTCHAs are the most common. They work by providing texts in different characters in an obscured way, and a text box for answers. They may also provide simple math problems. As a user using Captcha for enhancing security, you are expected to either repeat the text you see exactly as it is or provide the answer to the math problem.


–          It is simple and easy.

–          It doesn’t take time to solve.


–          It is easy to exploit.

–          It may prove difficult to distort characters looking similar.

Examples of popular typing-based CAPTCHA systems include:

–          hCaptcha: This type of text-based CAPTCHA provides you with tasks like typing or picking out a particular text from an image. It is an alternative to reCAPTCHA.

–          reCAPTCHA: This is one of the most well-used systems. It works basically by providing you with distorted text like an image. Users are to type exactly as it is in the text box provided.

–          NuCaptcha: This CAPTCHA system uses animated or moving elements with texts incorporated in them, to cause a bit more challenge and make it harder for bots to access.

Image Recognition CAPTCHAs

This is another common type of CAPTCHA. It provides challenges using images. You are expected to either select similar images or pick out a specific image among different ones. These image-based challenges may also be presented as Jigsaw puzzles to be rearranged.


–          It provides more security.

–          It is relatively easy for humans.


–          Accessibility for users with disabilities.

–          It may be a bit difficult.

Examples of successful image recognition CAPTCHA systems:

–          Select the Images: Users are asked to select certain images in a grid of images that is provided. These images may contain different objects like cars, traffic lights, or chimneys.

–          Slider CAPTCHA: This CAPTCHA system presents a blurry image in small grids and asks a user to slide a part of the image to complete it. This is not a task that a bot can do, hence it is useful in giving resources access to only humans.

–          Image Verification: This system of verification asks users to perform a specific action on an image presented. Users may be asked to select all images containing cats, for example. This is based on a specific task within an image.

Audio and Sound-based CAPTCHAs

Audio-based CAPTCHAs are a more advanced method of verification. It works by presenting short audio clips that may be suppressed for a user to type in what was heard in the clip. This may be a series of numbers or letters or mixed.


–          It is more advanced.

–          It is effective for visually impaired users.


–          Suppressed sound may be too unclear

–          Accessibility problems with captcha

Examples of audio-based CAPTCHA systems:

–          Audio Playback: This system provides a user with a text box to input what is in an audio clip after listening. This may be a sequence of numbers, words, or letters. The audio may be unclear using background noise to make it more challenging.

–          Audio Puzzle: This verification system provides a user with a puzzle in a clip. It may be a question that the user is supposed to type the answer to or a sentence where a word is omitted and a user is expected to find out what word is missing.

–          Noise Suppression: The audio clip presented in this kind of system is purposely distorted to make it more difficult for bots to decipher. A user is required to give the answer by typing the words heard and trying to ignore the noise distraction.

Biometric Analysis and Other CAPTCHA Alternatives

This is an alternative to the commonly known CAPTCHAs. The system records the user’s biometrics, by using a fingerprint or iris scanner to grant access to websites and other resources.

It ensures that only users whose biometric data was recorded are given access. It improves security generally. Other alternatives include behavioral analysis.

With improved and modern technologies, Captcha has evolved from traditional typing-based verification methods to more advanced audio-based biometrics. It has generally proved effective in keeping bots from accessing important confidential information.
